Apex Kitchen Remodel: Smarter Design, Better Flow, and Elevated Finishes

We recently completed a kitchen remodel in Apex, NC that greatly improved function without altering the footprint. We focused on smarter use, cleaner lines, and thoughtful upgrades that improve how the space functions day to day while creating a more modern, streamlined, and visually striking kitchen.

Starting Point: A Functional Layout That Needed Refinement

The original layout featured a cooktop with a microwave installed above it, while the double ovens were positioned separately along the far wall. White cabinetry at varying heights and black granite countertops completed the space. While functional, the staggered cabinet heights were both inefficient and visually disruptive. Ventilation was also a significant issue—a common challenge with over-the-cooktop microwave setups.

Our goal was not to rewrite the entire script. By keeping the same footprint, we delivered a high return on investment while completely re-engineering the space to maximize storage, workflow, and ventilation.

Improved Ventilation & Cooking Performance

One of the most impactful upgrades in this Apex kitchen remodel was replacing the microwave-over-cooktop setup with a larger gas cooktop, complemented by a custom wood hood and a properly designed ventilation system. A new dedicated vent pipe was installed so the hood could exhaust cooking steam, grease, and odors outside the home.

This is essential not only for improving air quality, but also for preventing moisture buildup, lingering odors, and grease accumulation on surrounding surfaces—issues the previous setup struggled to manage.

From a design standpoint, the traditional wood hood introduces scale and craftsmanship that anchors the space. The detailing and molding tie seamlessly with the surrounding cabinetry, creating a cohesive, built-in look. Extending the backsplash all the way up the wall behind the hood reinforces the focal point, draws the eye upward, and gives the cooking wall a finished, architectural feel.

Storage Solutions

A primary objective in this Apex kitchen remodel was to improve storage and day-to-day function. We achieved that through a more disciplined cabinet layout and a larger, better-performing island. The previous staggered cabinet heights disrupted the visual flow and made the space feel smaller than it actually was. By aligning the cabinetry and extending it to the ceiling—with a stacker cabinet row and integrated lighting—the space now reads taller, more cohesive, and far easier to navigate.

We also incorporated a wide hopper cabinet above the refrigerator, creating practical, out-of-the-way storage for less frequently used items.

The new, expanded island drives both storage and workflow. We designed it to handle more of the kitchen’s daily demands, incorporating deep drawers, substantial base cabinetry, and the sink and dishwasher for a more efficient, centralized work zone.

A deep blue finish creates contrast against the perimeter white cabinetry and anchors the room visually. Counter-height seating for four turns the island into a natural gathering space, while glass pendant lighting above delivers focused task lighting without adding visual weight.

Materials That Balance Durability and Design

Material selection wasn’t just about performance—it was also an opportunity to reflect the homeowner’s appreciation for a Santorini-inspired aesthetic in a way that feels natural while brightening the space.

The countertops feature a Santorini quartzite, a natural stone known for its durability and striking appearance. With deep grey and black tones accented by subtle hints of gold, it delivers a bold, modern look. The material resists heat, scratches, and etching, making it well-suited for daily use, while the natural variation in each slab adds depth and a one-of-a-kind character that elevates the entire space.

We intentionally kept the backsplash restrained to keep the space from feeling overly active. Matte ceramic subway tile provides a clean, consistent surface with a low-reflective finish, allowing the quartzite to stand out without competition. This pairing balances texture and visual interest while keeping the space grounded.

Smarter Appliance Integration

Removing the microwave from above the cooktop opened up better design and ventilation opportunities, but it still needed a home. We integrated a low-profile microwave below the counter, under the dedicated coffee station. This keeps it accessible without interrupting sightlines or taking up premium wall space.

We upgraded the double ovens, gas cooktop, and microwave but we were able to reuse the fridge and dishwasher.

Extending Function Beyond the Kitchen

Just outside the main space, we updated the cabinetry and counters in the bar alcove along the hallway connecting to the living room. This creates a natural transition for entertaining—giving guests a place to gather and grab drinks without crowding the primary cooking area.

Finishing Touches: A Cohesive Home Update

To tie everything together, the entire home was painted as part of the project. This ensures the updated kitchen feels connected to the surrounding spaces while giving the whole home a bright, refreshed feel.

The Result: Improved Functionality

This Apex kitchen remodel is a great example of what can be achieved without changing the footprint. By focusing on better cabinet design, improved ventilation, and thoughtful material selection, the space now works more efficiently and feels intentional.

Most importantly, the homeowners are extremely happy—not just with the final result, but with the process. Clear communication, structured project management, and a defined workflow made the experience as solid as the end result.

If you’re considering a kitchen remodel, the takeaway is simple: you don’t always need to expand your kitchen to get more out of your space. With the right plan, you can improve storage, workflow, and overall performance in a way that feels intentional and built to last. Working with a team that understands both design and construction ensures every decision adds real value to your home.
