Seamless Flow: A Curbless Shower Remodel in Raleigh, NC

This Raleigh bathroom remodel wasn’t just about updating finishes — it was about rethinking how the space functions from top to bottom. We moved away from a compartmentalized layout and toward a cohesive, open-concept wet room.

The Project: A Study in Continuity

Refinished vanity in wet room At the core of this design is a uniform hexagon tile floor, a mix of soft gray, cream, and white tones, that spans the entire bathroom and shower area. With no curb on the shower to break the line of sight, the geometric pattern flows seamlessly from the double vanity into the curbless shower, making the space feel larger, brighter, and visually uninterrupted.

The double vanity anchors the space. We refinished the existing cabinets in a rich dark blue, giving them a fresh, modern look while reusing the original unit. The quartz countertops, arched-top mirrors, and stainless steel fixtures provide durability and timeless style.

For the shower walls, large-format, marble-look porcelain tile provides the ideal choice for a zero-entry environment due to porcelain’s high-density and low porosity. Plus, they stand up well in high-moisture spaces while delivering the look of natural stone. The shower features a frameless glass enclosure with no base frame, preserving the open, walk-in feel while controlling splashes. A custom recessed niche system with four compartments maximizes storage without cluttering the visual plane.

Positioned adjacent to the shower is a freestanding soaking tub. In this curbless wet zone, the entire section of the room functions as a unified waterproofed area. The plumbing includes both a main shower head and a flexible hand shower for functional versatility.

Why Curbless Showers Are More Than a Trend

A curbless shower eliminates the traditional 6-inch threshold, removing a common trip hazard and making daily use safer. This zero-threshold design is particularly beneficial for those planning to age in place, allowing residents to move comfortably and confidently in the bathroom for years to come.

In addition to improving safety, a zero-threshold shower transforms how the space feels. Without a curb interrupting the floor line, the eye naturally reads the shower as part of the entire room, instantly expanding the sense of space without moving walls or enlarging the footprint.

The Engineering Behind a Zero-Entry Shower

A curbless shower doesn’t just remove the curb — it requires precise engineering to direct water and safeguard the subfloor.

  • Recessing the Subfloor: To achieve a flush entry, we modify the subfloor structure so the shower pan sits below the main floor level. This allows the finished tile surfaces in the bathroom and shower to meet at a perfectly flush seam without sacrificing structural support.
  • Precise Floor Slope: Without a curb to contain water, the floor gradient becomes the primary water management tool. We calculate and construct a slope — typically around ¼″ per foot — directing water efficiently toward the drain. Linear drains are a common solution in curbless setups because they allow a single-plane slope and support large tile layouts without disruption.
  • Integrated Waterproofing: In a curbless installation, the entire bathroom can become a “wet room.” We install high-performance waterproofing membranes that wrap floors and walls, creating a continuous barrier against moisture intrusion. This system protects framing and subfloors and ensures long-term durability.
