We recently completed a retro-to-modern kitchen remodeling project inside the beltline in Raleigh NC near NCSU that beautifully preserves the home’s original charm while delivering a more open, highly functional layout. The project began in a home rich with history, featuring well-maintained cabinetry from the 1960s, original windows, and a distinctive display shelf that wrapped along the adjacent dining room near the ceiling. While the kitchen had seen a few updates over the years—including stainless steel appliances and a small square tile backsplash—the tight layout no longer supported the homeowners’ needs for modern living.
Opening Up the Space
The original kitchen was configured as a galley and that was a very tight space with limited flow and visibility. By removing a wall, we immediately opened up the space and created better flow and connectivity between the kitchen, dining, and living areas. This involved foundation work and some roof support structure work in the attic.
We intentionally preserved the home’s retro look by keeping the large brick fireplace wall and exposed side intact. This, along with defining the dining area, maintained the home’s architectural character while improving overall functionality. The result is a space that feels significantly larger and more connected, without sacrificing its original charm—one of the key objectives of this kitchen remodeling project.
A Custom Built-In That Bridges the Kitchen and Living Area
At the end of the large brick wall with the fireplace, where the kitchen and living area meet, we designed and installed a custom retro looking built-in bookshelf. This feature adds both storage and visual interest, with a crisp white painted frame paired with rich, stained wood shelving. A built-in GFI outlet adds convenience, while the lower portion discreetly houses the large A/C return grille, finished with a decorative metal cover that blends seamlessly into the design.
Two-Tone Cabinetry and a More Functional Kitchen Layout
The new kitchen layout wraps efficiently around the perimeter, opening toward the dining area. We used cabinetry in a sophisticated two-tone design. Off-white upper cabinets extend to the ceiling and the kitchen features a full wall of off-white cabinetry for optimized storage. The lower cabinets, island, and custom-built dining room server are finished in a rich Kodiak stain. Select upper cabinets feature glass-front display sections, creating an opportunity to showcase curated pieces, along with a dedicated shelf for a small microwave to maintain a streamlined look.
A space-efficient island anchors this Raleigh kitchen remodeling project, offering seating for three, a built-in dishwasher, and a highly functional workstation sink. Two soft off-white pendant lights hang above, adding warmth and subtle contrast while enhancing task lighting.
Modern Finishes with Clean, Architectural Detail
The countertops are finished in durable quartz, offering both beauty and low maintenance. Complementing the surfaces is a standout backsplash made of ultra-thin, horizontally stacked dark green tiles with crisp white grout. This sleek, linear design introduces texture and color while reinforcing this kitchen remodeling project’s modern direction.
Coordinated Updates Throughout the Main Living Area
Throughout the home, new hardwood flooring ties the main living area together, creating a cohesive flow between the kitchen, dining, and living spaces. In the dining area, a custom-built server, elegant crown molding, and a six-bulb glass light fixture work together to define the space and add a refined, polished touch. We also preserved the homeowner’s previous wall painting that was directly on the drywall in the existing kitchen and installed it in the back of a glass wall cabinet to retain their family’s history.
Built for Modern Functionality
Functionality was also a major focus in this Raleigh kitchen remodeling project. Additional electrical outlets were strategically added throughout the kitchen to support modern appliance use and everyday convenience. New recessed lighting brightens the space evenly, while updated windows enhance natural light. Stainless steel appliances, including a ventless oven, complete the kitchen with a clean and efficient setup designed for today’s lifestyle.
